ABOUT OMAHA

This Omaha zoo is one of the most highly respected and popular zoos in the world. The zoo has been operating continuously in Omaha since 1894, which makes it one of the longest-running zoos in the country. The zoo is incredibly expansive and has some of the largest enclosures in the world. Visitors can easily spend a whole day here taking in this amazing experience.

Many visitors will find the best part of the zoo to be the Cat Complex, which is the largest enclosure for big cats in North America. It houses 30 big cats, including tigers, lions, jaguars, leopards, cheetahs and pumas.

Another very popular exhibit in the zoo is the Eugene T. Mahoney Kingdom of the Night, the world's largest enclosure that is dedicated to nocturnal animals. The bat cave in particular is very fascinating, though others may find the world's largest indoor swamp to be even more enjoyable.

Hubbard Gorilla Valley is another favorite of visitors to Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium. This three-acre enclosure allows the gorillas to roam free. They often take delight in showing off for visitors, and kids in particular will really enjoy this exhibit.

The Lied Jungle is one of the largest indoor rainforest exhibits in the world. Visitors will come across it as soon as they walk through the entrance of the zoo. The building is 80-feet tall and covers over one and a half acres. There are more than 90 species of animals in the rainforest and visitors can walk right through the forest along a dirt path. This is a really enjoyable exhibit to visit during the cold winter months.

The Scott Kingdom of the Seas Aquarium is another highlight of a visit to the zoo. The shark tank is particularly impressive at a size of almost a million gallons. It houses not only sharks, but sea turtles, stingrays and beautiful coral reef fish. There are many interactive displays that children will love, including one that allows them to feel the scales of a shark and the skin of a stingray.

Perhaps the most impressive exhibit at the zoo is the Desert Dome, which is the largest indoor desert in the world. It cost more than $30 million to build and is just under an acre in size. It is full of recreated desert landscapes from around the world and is roofed by the largest glazed geodesic dome in the world.
